| with gas prices rising (expected 1.25 on labor day i hear, because of some alaskan pipeline shutting down) i decided to do some analysis.
1. work is about 12km away from my house (according to odometer) 2. 2005 mazda3 gets about 9.1L/100km city, 6.4L/100km highway 3. it's about 6km city and 6km highway to work 4. VIVA bus fare from home to work is 2.50 5. assume 1.00 per litre of gas
using this data, (0.091 * 6) + (0.064 * 6) * 1.00 = $0.93 to get to work, one way
looking at this data, you can see it's pretty worth it for me to drive. what if gas prices go up? (0.091 * 6) + (0.064 * 6) * X = $2.50, gas would have to be $2.68 per litre for it to be worth taking the bus
how far of a trip would it have to be for it to be worth it to take the bus? (assuming it's an all city trip) (0.091 * Y) = $2.50, a 27.4km trip
of course, that doesn't include car maintenance, etc. and if i was considering going downtown and having to pay for parking, i would probably take the bus. also, this doesn't include lease payments, insurance, etc. maybe another day i'll add in insurance, lease payments, and car maintenance to see if i had no car, would it be more economical to just take the bus everyday and not buy a car at all. i suspect that it's probably cheaper. (car payments and insurance comes out to roughly 15 bucks a day)
in conclusion, if you want to save money, it's probably a better idea to carpool and split the gas costs than to take public transit, unless you're going uber far (but again, 27 km one way from my house is mississauga already, and by the time you're out there you've probably paid a couple fares). |
